The Quick Facts on Abilify
Abilify belongs to the group of medications named antipsychotics.
Abilify was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizophrenia on November 15, 2002.
Abilify is a member of the class of drugs called atypical antipychotics, popularly prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia.
Other members of this class of drugs include Zyprexa, Risperdal and Seroquel.
Abilify lessens irregular tension in the brain that frequently leads to the incapacitating side effects of schizophrenia, which involve the lack of ability to work in everyday life and a rapid, abnormal change in behavior and thought.
Abilify is used to treat schizophrenia and is part of a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics. It is in the same class as Zyprexa, Risperdal and Seroquel.
Abilify, and a number of other drugs might increase the possibility of a specific, and potentially fatal heart-rhythm irregularity called torsade de pointes.
In a recent study, atypical antipychotics similar to Abilify were found to cause diabetes 50 percent more often than older drugs.
Abilify FDA Warning
On April 13, 2004, the FDA instructed Bristol-Myers Squibb to notify healthcare professionals of a revision to the warnings section of labeling for Abilify (aripiprazole), describing the potential increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes in patients taking the drug.
FDA asked all manufacturers of atypical antipsychotic medications, including Bristol-Myers Squibb, to add this Warning statement to labeling.
