Arthrotec is administered for the treatment of symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Arthrotec belongs to the class of medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). It lessens pain and inflammation. Arthrotec helps to shield the stomach from irritation and stomach ulcers that can be caused by diclofenac.

The following side effects may go away as your body becomes used to the medication; inform your physician if the following side effects continue or become troublesome. A common side effect of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is stomach upset. Taking the medication immediately after a meal, or with food or milk can minimize this.

Arthrotec/cytotec label has been updated to state that the medication is widely used to stimulate labor and delivery, and the fact that the medication is part of an FDA-approved treatment for medical abortion. However, the label continues to carry a contraindication for use in pregnant women. This continues to put the doctors in a risky position.
