Auto Liability Insurance
Automotive liability insurance covers injuries and damages to others where you are at fault in an auto accident. Most states require you to have a specified minimum amount of Auto Liability insurance.
Types of auto insurance liability coverage:
Bodily Injury (BI) coverage is for medical bills and other expenses (such as loss of wages, pain and suffering) of those hurt in an accident which is your fault.
Property Damage (PD) coverage pays the cost of repairing vehicles or other property damaged in an accident for where you are at fault. Property Damage coverage does not repair your car.
Liability coverages are expressed as three sets of numbers representing thousands of dollars. 100/300/100 policy would mean one hundred thousand dollars, three hundred thousand dollars, one hundred thousand dollars in coverage. The first number is the most money paid for bodily injury (BI) that is paid to any one person in an accident. The second number is the maximum payment for the combined total of all bodily injury claims. The third number is the highest payout for all property damage claims in an accident. Another type of coverage is called "single limit liability." In that case the number denotes the amount covered for combined total liability in a single accident.
Auto Insurance companies always offer increasing amounts of liability coverages. Medical costs and increasingly expensive vehicles mean you'll need more liability coverage than you might expect. It is possible that a judge could order you to pay out of your pocket for auto insurance claims that are in excess of your policy limits.
