Every year over 5,000 car drivers and passengers are killed in accidents involving trucks and over 500 truck drivers receive fatal injuries
Collision and Comprehensive
The two types of coverage that protect your vehicle are collision and comprehensive .
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle when it is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or an object such as a fence, a sign, or if your vehicle rolls over.
Comprehensive pays for repair or replacement when your vehicle is damaged by a hazard other than collision. Theft, vandalism, fire, glass breakage, impact with an animal, and weather-related damage are covered under this portion of your policy.
Collision and comprehensive
are not legally required. Financed vehicles
are required by the lender to carry these coverages
as a condition of the loan. Collision
and comprehensive usually carry deductibles,
(the amount you must pay out of your own pocket for
each loss). Your auto insurance company pays the balance
remaining after you pay the deductible amount. Buying
a higher deductible policy can reduce your premium payment.
This reduces rates because your auto insurance does
not have to cover smaller claims.
If you have an older, low value car, dropping collision and comprehensive coverage will save you money, since the larger premiums rarely justify the small settlement you would receive for that car if you suffered a total loss. Some auto insurance firms will not offer collision and comprehensive on cars more than ten years old.
