Breaking News! - FDA reports 43 cases of blindness caused from Viagra/Cialis/Levitra use. Presently the FDA is looking into this matter.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publicized that it was looking into the rare cases of varying degrees of vision loss, including blindness, with the makers of Viagra , Cialis and Levitra .   The manufacturer of Cialis has willingly added a one-line statement to its label. Viagra has been administered to 23 million users, so there is no reason for Viagra users to panic, but Viagra patients with diabetes may be at an increased risk.

The present issue is vision loss when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked, a condition known as non- arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Presently, the FDA has received 43 reports of NAION from the impotence drug users: 38 for Viagra , four for Cialis and one for Levitra , as stated by spokeswoman Susan Cruzan.

Also confusing the subject: NAION is believed to be one of the most frequent sources of unexpected vision loss in older Americans, and estimates imply there are approximately 1000 to 6,000 incidents a year. Risk factors include diabetes and heart disease, two of the leading causes of impotence.

Non- arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) arises when small arteries in the eye do not get enough blood, creating a spontaneous stroke in the optic nerve.   Visual effects can differ from loss of a segment of the visual area to total blindness. NAION affects 1 to 10 out of 100,000 people. Those thought to be at risk are individuals with existing blood vessel problems, such as diabetes or hypertension. It typically happens during the night when blood pressure is naturally lower. Roughly 10 percent to 20 percent of individuals, which get NAION in one eye, will at some time get it in the other eye. Vision may suddenly improve in about 40 percent of cases, but virtually never returns to normal. Currently, there is no treatment.

Viagra and its competitors ( Cialis and Levitra ) are chartbuster drugs that transformed treatment of erectile dysfunction, and they already come with critical warnings: They're not to be taken by males which take nitrate-containing medications, the interaction could produce deadly declines in blood pressure, or by males with heart conditions whose physicians have forewarned that sex itself could be too much physical exertion.

All three also warn about momentary vision changes - seeing bluish tinges or having problems distinguishing between green and blue. The medications seemingly have a momentary effect on the retina, a different issue from NAION.

Viagra is also at the center of debate over Medicaid's payment for prescriptions of the medication for convicted sex offenders in New York and other states.

The loss of vision is permanent.
