Auto Insurance - Underinsured Motorist

Underinsured motorists coverage is similar to uninsured motorists coverage and sometimes offered together as packages. However, these two car insurance coverages should not be confused with each other. Should you have a valid claim against a person whose coverage cannot meet your damages, your policy will meet the difference-up to the limit of liability listed on your policy.

Uninsured motorist coverage offers protection to you, your family and passengers in the event of injuries caused by a driver who does not have liability car insurance coverage to cover medical bills, lost wages and reimbursement for pain and suffering.

Underinsured motorist coverage offers protection to you, your family and passengers in the event of injuries caused by a driver who does not have adequate liability car insurance coverage to cover medical bills, lost wages and reimbursement for pain and suffering.

Underinsured motorists insurance pays for injuries not fully covered by the other motorist's car insurance. This policy helps to compensate you - the injured party for the difference between an injury suffered and the liability covered by the insurance of the motorist/driver who is at fault.

Although car insurance is required to drive, there are an increasing number of uninsured motorist who continue to drive without car insurance coverage. That is why there is growing need for you to protect yourself from an uninsured or underinsured motorist.

The current law does not require a driver to carry underinsured motorist coverage.  However, when you elect to carry underinsured motorist coverage, your own insurance company pays you for injuries suffered in an auto accident when the at-fault driver has insurance, just not enough of it.  While there are many uninsured drivers on the road, there are also many who are insured, but do not carry a sufficient amount of liability coverage to fully compensate the victims of accidents caused by their negligence.  Underinsured Motorist Coverage can be used whether you are a driver, passenger, pedestrian, or even the victim of a hit-and-run accident (provided that the at-fault driver is later identified).

In some states, both uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury are bundled into a single coverage. In the states where it is offered, this coverage may be mandatory. Policies vary from state to state but in most cases uninsured and underinsured motorist coverages cover you in any motor vehicle you are in, as well as being a pedestrian or riding a bicycle.
