SANTA ANA , Calif. - The family of a man who was run over and killed while chasing a tow truck driver who had taken his car has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $2 million.

Leoncio Flores, 42, was run over last June as he ran after the truck and pleaded with its driver to release his car, said Federico Sayre, the attorney representing Flores ' family. Flores, a forklift operator, had illegally parked his SUV while he carried groceries into his Santa Ana condominium, Sayre said.

Court Issues Largest Punitive Damage Award In Iowa History

DES MOINES, Iowa The wife of a slain Warren County farmer has been awarded one of the biggest punitive damage awards in Iowa history.

Ronda Lyon received an eleven-point-five-million judgment today in her wrongful death lawsuit against Rodney Heemstra, who killed her husband Tom Lyon in 2003 after a long-standing dispute.

Heemstra, a 46-year-old Milo farmer, is serving a life sentence in Anamosa State Prison for shooting his neighbor and burying him in a cistern a quarter mile from the killing.

25.   Charleroi Family Files Suit in Fatal Truck Car Crash

The family of a Charleroi man killed last year in a fiery crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the truck driver they blame for causing the fatal collision.

The four-count lawsuit filed this week in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court accuses Randall Kildow, of Elizabeth Township , Allegheny County , of operating a tri-axle dump truck in a negligent and reckless manner on March 16, 2005 .

Also named as a defendant was TR Trucking, of Ruffsdale, which owned the truck and employed Kildow at the time of the accident.

DENVER - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Denver Office has sent Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) compliance assistance letters to local education agencies (LEAs) in Wyoming , Montana , South Dakota and North Dakota as a reminder of school responsibilities concerning asbestos.

CHICAGO, IL -- February 3, 2006 -- Interferon alpha maintenance therapy may provide substantial improvement in survival over existing therapies in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), according to findings presented here at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) 42 nd Annual Meeting.

In the study, researchers used a prospective database of patients with MPM to analyze the outcomes with multimodality therapy using radical pleurectomy/decortication and adjuvant radiotherapy with and without maintenance interferon alpha.

29.   Mother Hopes to Gain Some Peace of Mind with Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The mother of college student Beth Ann Ruhl, who was killed two years ago when her car was run off a road in Cornwall , hopes that a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the other car will bring her some emotional comfort.

That driver, Alfred Cirillo of New Windsor, who was 21 at the time of the accident, received a seven day sentence in the Orange County Jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving.

Beth Ann's mother, Betty Ann Ruhl, said winning a civil suit may ease some of the pain.

“In a way it will; that I know he had to pay,” she said. “But nothing will bring her back.

30.   Egg carton manufacturer fined £50,000 over asbestos

Following its successful prosecution of Omni-Pac (UK) Ltd, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reminds everyone of the dangers of asbestos.

Yesterday (1 February) the Great Yarmouth based company was fined a total of £50,000 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £86,000 at Norwich Crown Court, after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety law. This criminal case follows an investigation by HSE into the condition of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) at the firm's site in South Denes Road in October 2003.
